How to upgrade OpenERP on Ubuntu Linux

Here are my steps to upgrade OpenERP from 5.0.2 release to 5.0.3 on Ubuntu Linux. Please note this procedure only applies when OpenERP 5.0.2 was previously installed from source code (.tar.gz files). This upgrade is easy because both releases share the same Python libraries. This procedure is expected to work with the next OpenERP releases.

TIP: Copy and paste the following lines on a linux terminal

cd /opt
sudo apt-get install wget -y
sudo wget http://www.openerp.com/download/stable/source/openerp-server-5.0.3.tar.gz
sudo wget http://www.openerp.com/download/stable/source/openerp-client-5.0.3.tar.gz
sudo wget http://www.openerp.com/download/stable/source/openerp-web-5.0.3.tar.gz
sudo tar xvzf openerp-server-5.0.3.tar.gz
sudo tar xvzf openerp-client-5.0.3.tar.gz
sudo tar xvzf openerp-web-5.0.3.tar.gz
cd /opt/openerp-server-5.0.3
sudo python setup.py install
cd /opt/openerp-client-5.0.3
sudo python setup.py install
cd /opt/openerp-web-5.0.3
sudo python setup.py install

  1. do you know if these steps work to migrate from 5.0.0.3 too.

if not, or if you are not sure, could you tell me what I need to backup to save a OpenERP installation?

    thanks

    • Hi Adriano,

It’s hard to answer your first question without a detailed description. Please note that OpenERP Web 5.0.2 & 5.0.3 share the same Python libraries, while this is not the case with previous releases.

For saving OpenERP you need to backup the Database. From the GTK openerp-client menu i.e
      File-> Databases->Backup Database
Then you can restore it after saving from the same menu:
      File-> Databases->Restore Database

From the OpenERP Web login screen:
Databases -> Backup Database / Restore

A complete OpenERP database can be moved using PostgreSQL’s native backup/restore mechanism. Apart from the command line, the easy and straightforward way is to use pgadmin3 (GUI admin tool). Run pgadmin3, then connect to the database server, right click on the database name and select Backup from the contextual menu. I recommend to use COMPRESS mode (native and efficient) to save the backup. Still using pgadmin3, connect on the destination server, create a new database, right click on its name and select Restore.

  2. Any plans to do either a lucid TKL appliance or to move to a higher relase in OpenErp? Can the above instructions be used to update the build beyond 5.03?

    thank you.

    • Hi Arnold,

The above procedure is pretty much outdated.

openerp appliances already provide an update mechanism within the same release (V5 or V6)

Please note that a current V6 appliance is available for testing purposes and it’s the only one that runs on Ubuntu Lucid (10.04 LTS) and python2.6.

      BR,

    • After reading a few of your posts I must say i found this spiiefcc one to generally be really good. I have a blogging site as well and would choose to repost some snips of your articles in my blog website. Would it be alright if I use this as long I reference your site or build a backlink to your article I took the snip from? If not I recognize and would never do it with out your authorization . I have book marked this particular article to twitter along with myspace account intended for reference. Anyhow thank you either way!

  3. Please let me know if you’re looking for a writer
for your site. You have some really good articles and I believe
I would be a good asset. If you ever want to
take some of the load off, I’d really like to write some content for your blog in exchange for a link
back to mine. Please send me an email if interested.
    Thanks!

  4. Thanks for the swatches! I’m scheduled to attend the Wonder Woman event next weekend, and I definitely plan to pick up the Amazon Princess duo. So pretty! I really want Athena’s Kiss, but I’ve read more than one complaint about the packaging. I already have Hot House from the Venomous Villains collection, as well as NYX’s African Queen. I may just pick up Spitfire, instead. Looks like a nice color.
