OpenERP Appliance

Collaboration Works

This project has been discontinued. Source code is now public

My apologies for not updating the status of this blog since 2012. As you can imagine, this project has been discontinued and no longer makes sense working on it. More interesting CM solutions are freely available and based on disrupting technologies like vagrant, docker, puppet or ansible (openerp was renamed as odoo):

There is also a odoo appliance available.

My sincere gratitude to all the openerp community interested in my solution. I managed to sell the product internationally to many customers that made me feel motivated while doing job hunting; or being employed it made me busy in my spare time for 1 or 2 weeks every several months. This blog started in 2009 by sharing an IT related fun video in wordpress, followed by an OpenERP 5.0 manual installation Howto. This manual deployment was radically improved via bash scripting automation, which surprisingly gained popularity and new updates where published along with a video tutorial. The last evolution ocurred by building entire virtual machine appliances with the help of a modern AWS Cloud deployment automation and Configuration Management tool called turnkeylinux.

All this automation work helped me to get in 2010 one of the best contract job opportunities I had in the last five years in the telecom sector. Apparently I was hired because of my bash scripting skills.

In April 2011 I took one friday off for attending an OpenERP S.A. event in Madrid. That week I finished a long code refactoring task at work that kept me busy for over a month. After the OpenERP event I was forced to take my annual leave accumulated since 2010 (3 weeks). I lost my job the day of my return from vacation. We need better jobs. code is now public (the code used for building the appliances)

I no longer work in any other openerp/odoo related projects. There are many disruptive technologies around DevOps that caught my attention:

At the moment these are the Udemy certifications I’ve recently completed:

  • Learning Puppet, Licence UC-Q0ZY2L9O
  • Git Complete, Licence UC-YVYINB2M
  • AWS Certified Solution Architect – Associate 2015, Licence UC-14Z0KK71
  • Learning MongoDB, Licence UC-IY6L3768
  • Oracle WebLogic 12c for Administrators, Licence UC-UL2LCXHB
  • VMware ESxi and vSphere Admin Tutorial, Licence UC-ODI0IUPA

I’m not sure if I will be lucky enough to work with any of the above technologies. AWS is not yet gaining adoption in Spain, where the majority of the existing jobs are ITIL based. At the end I am always willing to learn and apply the best solution to a costly problem, like I did in November during a recruitment process where I applied a new approach based on Anaconda analytics.

Greetings from Barcelona, where I’ve been living for the last 3 years.
